Resumé and work history

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Louisiana State University, 2000

My design work begins in college with the costumes I created for the Krewe of Apollo in Baton Rouge, and with the numerous drag costumes I designed and built for drag performances at clubs in Baton Rouge, all while wishing I'd majored in something more exciting than Landscape Architecture.  Ready to commit to a new career, I moved to Houston in 2003 and got a job at a high-end apparel fabric store to learn textiles, volunteered at the Alley theatre costume shop under Kenneth Chu, and started working part-time at the Houston Ballet costume shop under Pat Padilla and occasionally the Grand Opera costume shop as well.

For three years at the ballet I learned on the job all the aspects of costuming construction, starting as a stitcher,  quickly taking on first handing and painting and dyeing, then learning patterning, draping, millinery, and tutu construction, and finally wardrobe supervision as a dresser with the Theatrical Wardrobe Union local 896 and eventually the second assistant to the head of the costume department. During that time I also got involved with a non-profit group called "Halloween Magic" that produced one semi-original spoof musical every Halloween to raise money for local AIDS charities. After assisting the designer one year, I designed and built the next year's show myself. I was hooked, but wanted to broaden my horizons and get more shop experience beyond ballet and opera. So I moved to Los Angeles and worked for several different costume shops, from James Hayes Studio which focused on puppets and specialty items for movies and commercials, to Center Group, which built major musical and theatrical productions, to J&M Costumers which specialized in walk-around mascot costumes, Cruise Ship performances, celibrity performers, and unique pieces for TV and film. I also transferred my union membership to the LA local and was able to work on a variety of touring shows as a dresser and stitcher to bring in extra cash during the lean Great Recession years.

Armed with a variety of experience, and tired of the interminable SoCal sunshine, I migrated north to San Francisco at the tail end of the Great Recession in 2010 right before it got too expensive to do so. Using my union ties, I started working with SF local dressing for the opera and ballet while learning the local theater scene. I started designing for local theaters and clients, and began working at SF ballet where I am currently the Costume Workroom Manager supervising new construction done on site.  I want to continue to develop new works and productions that challenge my expectations and widen my perspectives, whatever their style, so that I can grow and learn as a designer. It's been an amazing road so far, and I'm excited to see where the next turn leads.
